Biography
Valdemar C. da Rocha Jr. (M77, SM04, LSM12), born August 27, 1947, former chair of the Department of Electronics and Systems at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, his work focus in coding theory, information theory and cryptography.Â
He received the B.S. in electrical and electronics engineering in1970 from Escola Politécnica, Recife, Brazil and was granted a Brazilian Ministry of Education Fellowship. He began graduate studies in 1972 at the University of Kent, concentrating on coding theory and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1976, with Paddy Farrell as his supervisor. He returned to Brazil and became a Professor of Telecommunications at UFPE until his retirement in 2022.
Academic life
da Rocha taught at UFPE from 1976 to 2022. He has taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology-Zurich, the University of Leeds and Lancaster University.
Honors and awards
Fellow, 1992, Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
Emeritus Member, 2008, Brazilian Telecommunications Society.
His research interests are in applied digital information theory, including coding theory and cryptography.Â
